SIDNEY'S THOUGHTS NUMBER TWO.
THE PRODUCTIVE USE OF ARABLE LAND.
ARABLE LAND, that is land that is fit to use for the cultivation of crops, is vital to our survival and the alleviation of poverty worldwide.
The present availability of arable land is one part of the equation. The other vital part is optimal use of arable land for the cultivation of crops and or grazing of domestic animals which in turn provide food for the people.
Much of the absence of the optimal use of arable land is due to the action of some governments that support the seizure of farmland and give it to people who are not interested in farming with a view to produce food for the masses. Some of the beneficiaries of governmental generosity simply utilise vast tracts of farm land to provide food for themselves. This situation is going to cause a short supply of food for the general population and probable starvation of the poor inhabitants.
We currently have a situation worldwide where the population of countries is growing at an alarming rate, while arable land is not being fully utilised for efficient commercial farming. This is an untenable situation and governments worldwide must ensure that food production is made a priority in order to avert the consequences of starving people who will be competing for scarce resources.
Governments that simply take farms from legitimate owners and give it to their cronies, or governments that put pressure on commercial farmers to sell their land which the government then gives to others who do not have the interest and or expertise to farm on a commercial scale, are unwittingly creating a scenario where the beneficiaries who do not have the will, finance and expertise to farm, will only produce the products needed for their immediate survival.This practice will create a shortage of food in the country where this practice is condoned and it will contribute to the world shortage of food.
In a world where arable land is limited, population growth is out of control and global warming is changing the climate we need to take every available precaution to protect what resources are presently available.
I urgently call on all governments worldwide to consider my remarks and take immediate and drastic action to ensure that food production becomes their main challenge. Our survival depends on adequate food for all the world's inhabitants.
